Outstanding performance by Hong Kong students at Pan-Pearl River Delta Physics Olympiad

    A team of 28 secondary school students has won six first prizes, nine second prizes and nine third prizes for Hong Kong at the "3rd Pan-Pearl River Delta Physics Olympiad" It is the most outstanding achievement by a Hong Kong team. The previous best result was in 2005 when the team won five first prizes, one second prize and 10 third prizes.

     The competition was jointly organised by the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad Committee and the Physics Teaching Professional Commission of the Chinese Society of Education to promote physics education and provide challenging learning opportunities for the youth from the Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, who are gifted in physics.

     The Olympiad was held simultaneously at The Fung Hon Chu Gifted Education Centre (Hong Kong) and Shenzhen Secondary School (Mainland) on Monday (February 26).

     There were 358 top secondary students participating in the competition. Of them, 289 were elites from the secondary schools of nine provinces in the Mainland, while the rest came from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. The 28 Hong Kong participants were trainees of the Physics Enhancement Programme, the beneficiaries of "Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme" of the Education and Manpower Bureau. They were selected to take part in a series of Enhancement Courses as they achieved outstanding performance in the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad 2006.
