Princess Margaret Hospital diarrhoea cases

    Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) spokesperson made the following announcement today (February 12):

     There were six patients (aged 55-97) and one staff in a male Medicine & Geriatrics Ward presented with symptoms of diarrhoea or vomiting since February 8, 2007.  All patients are now under isolated treatment and in stable condition.  Appropriate tests for the patients and the staff have been arranged.  Results are pending.  The staff concerned is now on sick leave.

     Admission to the ward have been suspended.  Restricted visiting and discharge policy is implemented.  Patients and their relatives were informed of the situation.  Infection control measures in the ward concerned have already been stepped up according to guidelines.  All other patients and healthcare workers of the ward are under close surveillance of the Hospital Infection Control Team.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
