Police will conduct a territory-wide campaign to enhance public awareness of road safety with focus on anti-drink driving from tomorrow (February 12) to February 20.
Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams will invite members of the public to take voluntary breath tests and distribute publicity leaflets in bar areas to appeal to drivers not to drive after drinking. Strict enforcement action will be taken against offenders during the same period.
Police figures showed that there were 14,849 traffic accidents in 2006, a decrease of 213 cases when compared with 2005. Among these cases, 99 involved drink driving.
"Motorists are reminded not to drive after consuming alcohol. Offenders will be liable to a maximum fine of $25,000 and three years' imprisonment and penalised for 10 driving-offence points; or possible disqualification from driving," a Police spokesman said.
