The Government today (February 2) announced the appointment of three new members and the re-appointment of one incumbent member to the Committee on Financial Assistance for Family Members of those who Sacrifice their Lives to Save Others for a term of two years. The appointments will take effect from February 11 this year.
The new members appointed are: Mr Lee Jark-pui, Mr Ng Sze-fuk and Miss Gabriella Wong Siu-ling. Mr Lee has extensive public service experience and has served on different boards and advisory bodies. Mr Ng, who also has rich experience in public service, is the Chairman of the Sai Kung District Council. Miss Wong is the Agency Director of the Hong Kong Children and Youth Services. She is also serving on boards and committees relating to social welfare.
The incumbent member who has been re-appointed is Mr Poon Siu-ping.
The Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr York Chow, welcomed the appointments of the three new members and the re-appointment of the incumbent member. He looked forward to their contribution to the committee.
Dr Chow also thanked the outgoing members, Mr Chau How-chen and Mrs Justina Leung Ngai Mou-yin, for their contribution to the work of the committee during their term of appointment.
The committee serves as the approving authority to assess and determine applications under the financial assistance scheme to family members of an individual who dies as a result of trying to save or protect others. The scheme represents the Government's recognition of the honourable sacrifice of the deceased individual and assistance to alleviate the financial hardship that the surviving family members may face as a consequence of the heroic act.
