Appointments to Independent Police Complaints Council

    The Government announced today (December 28) the appointment of a new vice-chairman and three new members as well as the re-appointment of nine incumbent vice-chairmen and members to the Independent Police Complaints Council (IPCC).

     The appointments and re-appointments are from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2008.

     The new vice-chairman is Dr Hon Joseph Lee Kok-long. The other three new members are Mr Barry Cheung Chun-yuen, Dr Lawrence Lam Chi-kit and Mr Wong Kwok-yan.

     The re-appointed vice-chairmen and members are:

Hon Daniel Lam Wai-keung (Vice-chairman)
Dr Hon Lui Ming-wah (Vice-chairman)
Mr Yeung Yiu-chung
Dr Lo Wing-lok
Mr Edward Pong Chong
Mr Hui Yung-chung
Professor Tsou Ka-yin
Dr Tse Tak-fu
Ms Priscilla Wong Pui-sze

     The current Chairman is Mr Ronny Wong Fook-hum while other existing non-official members are: Mr Daniel Cham Ka-hung; Dr Charles Koo Ming-yan; Dr Michael Tsui Fuk-sun; and Mrs Helena Yuen Chan Suk-yee.

     The appointments will be published in the Government Gazette tomorrow (December 29).

     The IPCC is an independent civilian body responsible for monitoring and reviewing the investigation of complaints against the Police.

     "The IPCC plays an important role in ensuring public confidence in the Police complaints system," a Government spokesman said. "We are most grateful to the council for its hard work and wise counsel, and look forward to continuing to benefit from its advice."

     The Government thanked the outgoing Vice-chairman, Hon Alan Leong Kah-kit, and the three outgoing members, Ir Edgar Kwan Chi-ping, Dr Shum Ping-shiu and Professor Shek Tan-lei, for their valuable contributions to the work of the IPCC.
