The Central Committee on Infectious Disease of the Hospital Authority (HA) has reminded public hospital staff and visitors to keep a close watch on suspicious case presenting with gastroenteritis symptoms as Norovirus infection usually occurs as epidemics in the winter season.

All public hospitals will ensure compliance of infection control measures against Norovirus.  They have been reminded for the following important actions:

- Sharing of patient information on admission and transfer among the Accident & Emergency Departments, general wards and elderly homes.
- Prompt isolation of infective gastroenteritis patients that required hospitalization.  Prompt disinfection and cleansing of vomitus.
- Hospitals need to plan for reserve capacity in anticipation of surge during the winter season.

In the meantime, Kowloon Hospital (KH) announced the updates today (November 24) for a cluster of patients in a psychiatric wad presenting with vomiting and diarrhea symptoms recently.  There is one more male patient (aged 39) of the ward concerned presenting with vomiting and diarrhea symptoms. The patient is being isolated for treatment and in stable condition. Since November 22, 2006, there are totally 10 patients and one staff member presenting with the symptoms. Test results of four patients were found positive to Norovirus.

Infection control measures of the ward concerned have already been enhanced. There will be no admission to and discharge from the ward for the time being.  Visiting of the isolated cubicle in the ward is also suspended. All other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the HA and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
