A 44-year-old inmate of Stanley Prison was found by staff of the institution hanging with a piece of bed sheet in his cell at about 6.45am today (November 13).
First aid was immediately given at the scene. The inmate was then taken to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, where he was certified dead at 7.34am.
Police have been informed of the incident and an inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court. Investigations are being conducted by Correctional Services Department.
The inmate, surname Wong, was convicted of "Trafficking in a dangerous drug" and sentenced to imprisonment of 11 years. He was admitted to Stanley Prison in December, 2005.
