Public cooperation sought to keep HK free from rabies
*****************************************************

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department today (October 27) reminded the public that an import permit must be obtained from the department before bringing any dogs or cats from other places to Hong Kong.

Under existing legislation, all imported dogs and cats must be accompanied with certificates and those from the Mainland are also required to be quarantined at the department's animal quarantine centres for four months upon arrival in Hong Kong.

A department spokesman said Hong Kong had been free from rabies since 1987 and the government remained vigilant to prevent any possible outbreak.

People bringing in cats or dogs into Hong Kong without a valid permit are liable to a fine of $50,000 and to imprisonment for one year.

"People should observe good hygiene and avoid feeding or contacts with stray cats and dogs," the spokesman said.

Under the Rabies Regulation, keeping a dog over the age of five months must obtain a licence and the dog must be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. Offenders are liable to a maximum penalty of $10,000.
