Exchange Fund Abridged Balance Sheet and Currency Board Account
********************************************************

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced today (October 27) that the total assets of the Exchange Fund amounted to HK$1,144.2 billion on September 30, 2006.

The figure is included in the Exchange Fund Abridged Balance Sheet, which is released monthly together with the Currency Board Account.

At the end of September 2006 the total assets of the Exchange Fund, at HK$1,144.2 billion, were HK$14.2 billion higher than at the end of August 2006.  Foreign currency assets increased by HK$12.3 billion and Hong Kong dollar assets increased by HK$1.9 billion.

The rise in foreign currency assets was due mainly to an increase in Certificates of Indebtedness, valuation of foreign currency investments, interest and dividend income from foreign currency assets.  The rise in Hong Kong dollar assets was due mainly to an increase in bank borrowings and valuation of Hong Kong equities held by the Exchange Fund.  These increases were partly offset by fiscal drawdowns.

The Currency Board Account shows that the Monetary Base at the end of September 2006 was HK$293.0 billion, an increase of HK$5.4 billion, or 1.9%, from the end of August 2006.  The rise was due mainly to increases in Certificates of Indebtedness and in the market value of Exchange Fund Bills and Notes outstanding.

The Backing Assets increased by HK$7.2 billion, or 2.3%, to HK$326.4 billion.  The increase was attributable mainly to the issuance of Certificates of Indebtedness in the Monetary Base, interest from investments and revaluation gains.  Reflecting this, the backing ratio rose from 110.95% at the end of August 2006 to 111.40% at the end of September 2006.
