The beloved Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra will soon join popular singer of children's songs Purple Lee to give three popular concerts, "The Animal World".
Under the baton of Cheng Yuk and Chan Chiu-yin, the orchestra will perform works that are all related to animals, including "Mcdull Capriccio"; "Doraemon"; "The Animal Suite"; "Flying Dragons and Leaping Tigers"; "The Toad Does Not Drink"; "Fish Frolic" and "Totoro". Lee will also be the narrator of a mini musical "Dialogue between the Chicken and the Duck".
The concerts will be held at 3pm on Sunday, December 3 at Auditorium, Tai Po Civic Centre; December 10 at Theatre, Sheung Wan Civic Centre, and December 17 at Auditorium, Yuen Long Theatre.
Founded in 1962, the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra is one of the oldest Chinese orchestras in Hong Kong. The orchestra has organised regular performances to introduce different styles of Chinese folk music to the public and to provide training and performing opportunities to local young musicians, who then become winners of various music competitions. In recent years, the orchestra has collaborated with an array of music virtuosos and the performances have received great acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
After winning seven consecutive "TVB Children's Song Gold Award", Purple Lee is dubbed the new 'diva of children's songs'. She gave her first solo recital of children's songs in 2002 and a full house charity concert in 2004, and both received critical acclaim. Apart from writing children's songs, she works on radio and television programmes on Metro Broadcasts, TVB and New World Bus. Lee also writes for various magazines and newspapers columns.
"The Animal World" is one of the entertaining programmes in "Cheers! Series 2006" presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Other attractions of the series include "Space Little Prince" by Ming Ri Institute for Arts Education; "Little Fish"; "Magnificat & Christmas Delights" by the Hong Kong Oratorio Society; "A Little Night Music (Eine kleine Nachtmusik) and Johann Strauss and the Danube Maid" by the Marionettentheater Schloss Schonbrunn; "The Nutcracker" by the Hong Kong Ballet; Concert by the St. Petersburg Chamber Choir; "Magical Christmas with Piano Seven"; "Magic Beyond Belief" by the Spencers and the acrobatic shows by the Tweaksters. Tickets priced at $70 are now available at URBTIX outlets, while senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis).
