OFTA lays charges against Citizens' Radio

    The Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) today (October 23) laid charges against Citizens¡¯Radio and four men who were connected with an operation that OFTA had mounted on August 29, 2006, against suspected use and establishment of illegal radio equipment in Chai Wan.

     ¡°Citizens¡¯ Radio and another man were charged with establishing means of telecommunications without a licence. Three other men were charged with using unlicensed radiocommunications apparatus. The maximum penalty for such offences, upon summary conviction, is $50,000 fine and two years¡¯ imprisonment. They will appear in Eastern Magistrates¡¯ Courts on November 17,¡± OFTA¡¯s spokesperson said.

     The operation on August 29 was mounted by OFTA against the suspected use and establishment of unlicensed radio equipment by the Citizens¡¯ Radio for broadcasting purpose.

     Cases related to suspected use and establishment of unlicensed radio apparatus on October 4, 13 and 18, 2006, are still under investigation.
