Reading award scheme for adult prisoners kicks off (With photos)
*********************************************************

A reading award scheme for adult prisoners was launched in Shek Pik Prison (SPP) today (October 21).

With the aim to cultivate and promote reading culture among offenders and enhance their education and intellectual exposure, the Project Rainbow Reading Award scheme is co-organised by the Correctional Services Department (CSD), City University of Hong Kong Staff Association, Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union, and Agency for Volunteer Services.

The reading scheme is open to all prisoners in SPP.  Under the programme, lecturers, teaching staff and volunteers from the City University, Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union and Agency for Volunteer Services will visit prisoners at SPP and recommend books for reading. They will share with the prisoners what they have learnt in reading and guide them to write reading reports.

To tie in with the reading scheme, SPP has purchased some 600 recommended books in Chinese and foreign languages, bringing the total number of books in the prison library to nearly 8 000.

Officiating at the certificate presentation ceremony were Mr Yau Chi-chiu, Assistant Commissioner (Rehabilitation); Dr Tse Wing-ling, Associate Professor, Department of Applied Social Science of the University; Mr Yuen Hung-kai, Vice-Chairman of Honours Members, Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union; and Ms Shirley Cheung, Volunteer Programme and Services Manager of the Agency for Volunteer Service.
