The Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra will join National class one singer Chen Lingyu and gaohu soloist Yu Qiwei to present a "Cantonese Tunes" concert next month (November).
Different ensembles will showcase the many different facets of Cantonese music. The highlight will be the presence of the guest performers Chen and Yu who are renowned virtuosos in Cantonese song art and music.
The programme includes gaohu solo, Cantonese tune singing, ensembles, etc.
Yu Qiwei won a Class One Award at the National Chinese Music Experience Sharing Competition for Soloists in 1982 and the first Gold Disc Award in China in 1989. He also received commendations from the State Council as a "Professional with Outstanding Contribution to the Performing Arts of China", and was accredited as a National Class One Musician. He was appointed Head of Chinese Music at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2004, in which capacity he has given performances and talks in many countries in Europe, America and Southeast Asia, as well as in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and the mainland.
Chen Lingyu, a National Class One Performer and famous performer of Cantonese operatic arias with self-accompaniment on pipa, is a member of the Guangdong Youth Music and Quyi Troupe. Armed with her solid song art virtuosity, she has given more than 40 solo recitals in the mainland and overseas. She has come away with the highly coveted "Peony Award in Chinese Song Art" many times, as well as numerous other awards and prizes. Apart from playing pipa and singing, she also writes her own compositions and arranges music, making her one of the most versatile female artists in Chinese song art today.
Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra was established in 1979 to promote Chinese music and carry forward its rich heritage. It has toured Singapore, the United States, Australia and a number of Mainland cities and performed with numerous renowned artistes.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the concert will be staged at 8pm, November 18 (Saturday), at the Auditorium, Tuen Mun Town Hall. Tickets priced at $140, $110 and $80 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients. (Limited tickets for Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis.)
