Appointments to the Hong Kong Deposit Protection Board announced

   The Financial Secretary has appointed the following people to the Hong Kong Deposit Protection Board for a term of two years with effect from tomorrow (July 1):

Dr David Cheung Wai-lok   ĦĦMember (re-appointment)
Mr Nicholas Peter Etches    Member (re-appointment)
Mr Nam Lee-yick             Member (re-appointment)
Ms Elisabeth Charlotte ScottĦĦMember (new appointment)
Mr Yeung Yuet-bor           Member (new appointment)

    Commenting on the appointments, the Financial Secretary, Mr Henry Tang, said he was confident that, under the guidance of Professor Chan and other members, the board would establish an effective deposit protection scheme in Hong Kong, which would contribute to the stability of the financial system as a whole.

    Chairman of the board, Professor Chan, said he was honoured to be reappointed as the chairman.  "I look forward to working closely with other members in meeting the challenges ahead, in particular, the upcoming launch of the deposit protection scheme in the latter half of the year."  

    The board is established under Section 3 of the Deposit Protection Scheme Ordinance (Cap. 581).  Its main responsibility is to establish and maintain a deposit protection scheme in Hong Kong.  A notice of the appointments will be published in the Gazette on July 7, 2006.
