The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (June 20) the June 2006 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).
In this issue, two feature articles entitled "Composite Employment Estimates 2005" and "Business Performance and Operating Characteristics of the Transport Sector, 1995-2004" are included.
"Composite Employment Estimates 2005"
The Composite Employment Estimates (CEE) was first introduced in a feature article in the March 1997 issue of the Digest. Updates of the CEE have subsequently been provided in feature articles of the Digest on an annual basis.
The employment share of the various service sectors taken together increased from 82.7% to 86.0% of the total employment during 2000 to 2005. Among them, the "import and export trade" engaged 555 500 persons or 16.4% in 2005; "other community, social and personal services", 510 200 persons or 15.1%; and "wholesale and retail trades", 363 000 persons or 10.7%.
On the other hand, the combined employment share of the "manufacturing" and "construction" sectors continued to decline, from 16.5% in 2000 to 13.3% in 2005. This reflects the continued structural shift of the economy towards the service sectors during the period.
This article provides the CEE figures for 2000-2005. It also gives an account of the characteristics of CEE and briefly discusses the differences and usage of the CEE vis-a-vis the other employment figures.

"Business Performance and Operating Characteristics of the Transport Sector, 1995-2004"
With the progress in social and economic development in Hong Kong and the busy trade and tourist activities, the transport sector continued to expand during 1995 to 2004. It accounted for 8.2% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), as compared with 6.8% in 1995.
This feature article describes the business performance and operating characteristics of the transport sector during 1995-2004.
