The International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA) today (June 9) announced recipients of the annual awards, which the organisation presents to outstanding people to recognise their contributions in the field of performing arts.
In the Hong Kong Congress 2006, "Distinguished Artist Awards" went to Lin Hwai-min (Cloud Gate Dance Company, Taiwan), and Pak Suet-sin (Cantonese opera artist, Hong Kong). "International Citation of Merit" went to Professor Lo King-man (ex-schoolmaster of Hong Kong Performing Arts Academy, Hong Kong).
Founder and Artistic Director of the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, Lin Hwai-min is one of the most renowned choreographers in Asia. He draws his inspiration from Asian cultures and aesthetics to create works with contemporary resonance.
Madame Pak Suet-sin is a legendary figure and one of the most enduring stars in Cantonese opera. She formed the Sin Fung Ming Cantonese Opera Troupe in 1956 with her life-long partner, Madame Yam Kim-fai. New elements were injected into script writing, the performing style, singing technique, body movement and various aspects of stage design, setting new standards in stage aesthetics.
Professor Lo King-man has years of experience in the performing arts. Over a period of 40 years, he has written, produced, directed and designed for the stage internationally with more than 150 works to his credit. Professor Lo also has a distinguished career in higher education administration and public service in the arts.
The ISPA Hong Kong Congress, under the theme of "The New Silk Road for the Performing Arts", is running from June 6 to 11, and has recorded the highest registration rate for the summer congress in the past 10 years with some 300 candidates from more than 30 countries.
During the congress period, there are a wide spectrum of activities such as seminars, workshops, pitching session and performances, providing opportunities for peers and associates from countries all over the world to explore common interests. It also realises the ISPA's objective of making possible a gathering of performing arts professionals from around the world.
