The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, has extended his deepest sympathy and condolences to the victims and their families of the earthquake in central Java, Indonesia.
In a telephone conversation with the Indonesian President, Dr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, this morning (May 28), Mr Tsang said Hong Kong's aids agencies stood ready to help. The Director of Administration will coordinate the government's relief efforts in response to any request from Indonesia.
"On behalf of the Hong Kong community, I told the President that we are deeply grieved by the tragic loss and injuries of thousands of lives in Indonesia," said Mr Tsang.
"We have over 100,000 Indonesians living in Hong Kong. They are part of our Hong Kong family. I wish them well and want them to know that we are behind them in such a trying time," he said.
