Drugs seizure at Lai Chi Kok reception centre
*********************************************

Every measure was taken by the Correctional Services Department to prevent the smuggling of dangerous drugs into, and to eradicate any presence of them, in correctional institutions, a CSD spokesman said today (May 26).

Department officers conducted a surprise search this morning at the Lai chi Kok Reception Centre Hospital. Six packets of suspected dormicum wrapped in plastic sheets were seized from a remand prisoner who was receiving drug withdrawal treatment and under closed observation at the Hospital. The dangerous drugs were suspected to have been discharged from the remand prisoner's body.

"The department is committed to maintaining a drug-free environment for all people in its custody", he said.

The 74-year-old remand prisoner, surnamed Lau, was admitted to Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre  on Wednesday (May 24) on a charge of trafficking in a dangerous drug.

Investigations by the department are continuing to find out whether more dangerous drugs are still concealed in Lau's body. The case has been reported to the Police.

The spokesman said there were 88 seizures of dangerous drugs in 2005, mainly in the reception centres.
