An extraordinary puppet world full of mystical, captivating, powerful, elegant, precise and rare beauty will be unveiled in early June when Stephen Mottram stages "In Suspension" in Hong Kong.
The show will be presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
Working in full view of the audience on a small open stage with string puppets, Mottram lures the audience into an unexpected and magical experience. The strong atmospheric theatre haunts the audience long after the puppets have been packed away.
"In Suspension" is based on acute observation of the details of human movement. Elegant yet simple, it toys with perceptions of everyday things like gravity and balance. Bit by bit, the viewer is coaxed into a magical, funny and poetic alternative world where the norms no longer rule. There is no spoken language. Anyone old enough to watch carefully and quietly will find it enjoyable.
The music for "In Suspension" was especially composed by Glyn Perrin, Simon Waters and Pete McPhail. The music leads the audience toward the visual events and the choreography in turn set the tune for the musical moments.
Stephen Mottram is an artist, craftsman and puppeteer. Since 1988 he has been developing a unique theatre language, which exploits the relationship between electro-acoustic music and the movement-image. His solo show "In Suspension" has been performed in different venues around the world. Since 1990, Mottram's performances have been seen in nearly 40 countries.
He has also worked on a number of films including "The Little Shop of Horrors" and "Tales from the Decameron". He was one of the four main puppet operators on "Strings" ¡ª a Danish feature film.
