***********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Housing Authority:

The Housing Authority (HA) has published its second integrated Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Report highlighting performance on environmental, health and safety aspects.

Entitled "Sustainable Housing: Today and Tomorrow", the report outlined activities in Waste Reduction, Energy Saving, Materials Management, Estate Landscaping & Greening, Water, Air, Noise, Health & Hygiene and Safety during the 12-month period from April 1, 2004 to March 31, 2005.

"Efforts in enhancing neighbourhood development and instigating partnership for promotion of environmental, health and safety awareness among our business partners, staff, residents and the community are also discussed in the report," a spokesman for the HA said.

"For the first time, case studies have been included as examples of our achievements in green estate management, sustainable planning and design as well as 'green focused office' management," he said.

The report also sets out the HA's initiatives and quantifiable targets for the next four years.

While continuing to strengthen environmental, health and safety performance, the HA will step up active partnering with residents, business partners, green groups and maintain closer liaison with the Government, and the Council for Sustainable Development to promote a green, healthy and sustainable living environment for our residents.

"At present, both the Government and the community at large have high aspirations for sustainability. For public housing, the HA will pursue a range of practicable initiatives to address the social, economic and environmental needs of its tenants," he said.

In line with environmental protection, the report was produced in an environmentally friendly way by making it available as an e-version only. The report can also be viewed on the HA/HD website (http://www.housingauthority.gov.hk) while CD-ROMs will be made available to the HA members, staff, business partners, government bureaus and departments and green groups.
