Following is a transcript of the meet-the-media session by the Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works, Dr Sarah Liao this afternoon (March 16):
Reporter: Are you angry with the latest development...?
SETW: I think the incident is unfortunate but it is a separate incident. The important thing that we have been able to achieve is to clearly define the role of the Chairman and the Chief Executive. So it will be beneficial to the future operation of the company. As far as this single incident (March 14) of misconduct, or perceived to be a misconduct, we think it should not happen again.
Reporter: Are you referring to ...the firing of...?
SETW: It is the conduct of this group of staff.
Reporter: Why do you think it is an important decision?
SETW: It's an important issue that the Managing Board has considered thoroughly and that is why a decision has been made.
Reporter: Was the handshake just a show and that Mr Samuel Lai is responsible for all the disciplinary problem...?
SETW: The Tuesday resolution between the Chairman and the CEO is an important issue for the company. Because it is important to sort out the difference and also the unclear delegation of duties for the two posts, very important posts; And for that, we have successfully achieved a solution. So it is two separate issues. And for disciplinary actions, the company has its procedures and as for any company, criteria and duties of managing people is very important. That’s why we have to take serious action.
Reporter: The KCRC is in shambles, do you...?
SETW: I don't think it is. I think it will continue. As I have said, the majority and actually all the staff are well-equipped to run this company efficiently and safely. And to provide public transport for the community of Hong Kong.
