*********************************************

The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (February 3) obtained an order for payment of outstanding MPF contributions owed to 27 employees at around $185,000 against an employer in the District Court. MPFA today also pursued three claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $45,000 on behalf of five employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.

The District Court today issued a judgment against an employer. The defendant, Fitto Company Limited trading Matsuya Japanese Restaurant, was ordered to pay the MPFA the sum of $185,264.75, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable to 27 employees.

At the Tribunal's hearing today, the three defendants - Sky Cotton Limited, Leung Kam Wah formerly trading as Tat Ming Engineering & Trading Co, and Long To Cotton Yarn Company Limited - did not appear at today's hearing. In their absence, the Adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA the sums of $25,367.56, $17,775.48 and $2,589.98 respectively, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharge payable.

The amounts both awarded at the District Court and the Tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The court further awarded payments of $930 for the District Court case, $250, $170 and $60 for the Tribunal cases respectively as costs in respect of the claims.
