Following is a speech by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, at the pre-concert reception of the Mad About Mozart ¡ª The Birthday Concert this evening (January 27):
Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,
Good evening. Selina and I are both tremendous admirers of the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, so it is a distinct honour to be here tonight to help Hong Kong and the world celebrate the great composer¡¯s 250th birthday.
I would like to thank particularly RTHK Radio 4, the University of Hong Kong¡¯s Music Department, and the Consulate General of Austria for organising tonight¡¯s festivities.
There is no doubt about Mozart¡¯s legacy. He was an extraordinary composer, gifted in a wide variety of genres. He has delighted generations of music lovers with beautiful and memorable works that embody life¡¯s deepest joys and sorrows.
In a few moments, we will learn which of Mozart¡¯s many remarkable compositions are among music lovers¡¯ favourites. And then we will be treated to a performance of highlights of these favourites by the Hong Kong Sinfonietta.
So please, ladies and gentlemen, we'll enjoy tonight. Thank you.
