Territory-wide campaign to promote road safety

Police will launch a territory-wide Road Safety Campaign from tomorrow (January 27) to February 1 to enhance public awareness of road safety with focus on anti-drink driving.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams will invite people to take voluntary breath tests. They will also distribute publicity leaflets at bar areas to appeal to the public not to drive after drinking. Enforcement action will also be taken during the same period.

Police figures showed there were 15 035 traffic accidents in 2005, which was a marginal increase of nine cases when compared with 2004. Among these cases, 87 involved drink driving.

ˇ°Motorists are reminded not to drive after consuming alcohol. Offenders will be liable to a maximum fine of $25,000 and three years' imprisonment and penalised 10 driving-offence points  or possible disqualification from driving,ˇ± a Police spokesman said.
