Woman jailed for street deception

A 34-year-old woman was sentenced to one year and eight months¡¯ imprisonment for obtaining property by deception at the District Court today (January 18).

The court heard that on May 26 last year, Police received a report from a 43-year-old woman who suspected that two women were attempting to deceive passers-by in Tin Shui Wai area.

Police arrived at scene with the 43-year-old woman and found that the two women, aged 34 and 49, were trying to deceive passers-by with spiritual treatment modus operandi. Police immediately arrested the two women, both two-way permit holders.

Enquiries revealed that the 34-year-old woman was connected with a street deception case occurred at the end of April last year where a 42-year-old woman was cheated of property worth over $140,000 in area around Tai Po Railway Station.

The 34-year-old woman was charged with one count of obtaining property by deception on July 19.  She pleaded guilty to the charge at the District Court and the sentence was meted out today.

The 49-year-old woman, also arrested in the case, was charged with two counts of making false representations to an Immigration Officer earlier.  She was convicted and sentenced to 15 months¡¯ imprisonment on July 25.

Police called on members of the public to be cautious and those who might have been victimised to contact the Police.
