Housing Authority maintains current carpark charges
***************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Housing Authority:

     The Housing Authority (HA) will maintain current monthly and hourly carpark charges until 30 June 2006, for its 24,600 parking spaces at the non-divested carparks.

     The decision was taken today (January 6) by the Authority's Commercial Properties Committee (CPC) at a meeting to review carpark charges.

     CPC agreed to maintain the current monthly charges for:-

- private cars ranging from $990 to $1,850 for covered spaces and $800 to $1,520 for open spaces;
- motorcycles ranging from $250 for covered spaces and $200 for open spaces; and
- light goods vehicles ranging from $2,210 for covered spaces and $1,710 for open spaces

     HA also offers:-

- 15% discount for monthly pass holders transferred to the "floating allocation system";
- 40% discount for evening/overnight parking from 6pm to 8am of the following day; and
- 50% discount for disabled persons who live or work in public housing estates.

     A 20% discount will continue to be offered to shop tenants for bulk purchase of 100 parking coupons or multiples.

     "The monthly revenue received by HA from non-divested carparks is about $15 million," Chairman of CPC, Mr Walter Chan Kar-lok said.

     Noting that the Housing Department was concerned about the occupancy rate of carparks, Mr Chan said that studies would be conducted to explore the opportunity of converting surplus carparks into other beneficial uses.

     "The department has also commissioned a consultancy study on the long term demand of carparking spaces in public housing estates whereby surplus carparks in existing estates will be allocated to meet the demand of adjacent new public housing development with a view to reducing the number of parking spaces in new housing programme," Mr Chan said.
