Use of unregistered drugs for fat reduction prohibited

In response to a press report today (January 3) on the use of "Lipostabil" injection by some beauty salons and clinics for cosmetic treatment, a spokesman of the Department of Health (DH) said the drug in question is not registered in Hong Kong, and therefore its safety and efficacy have not been assessed.

The spokesman said distribution and possession of unregistered pharmaceutical products is an offence under the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance, with the maximum penalties on conviction of a fine of $100 000 and two years' imprisonment.

DH conducted inspections to a number of beauty salons and medical clinics today.  No unregistered pharmaceutical product was found.  Owners and doctors concerned were given appropriate advice, he said.

"The department will send letters to doctors and operators of beauty salons reminding them not to use unregistered pharmaceutical products.

"Members of the public including doctors, are urged to report to DH by calling 2572 2068 during office hours if they know of anyone using 'Lipostabil' injection or any other unregistered drugs," the spokesman said.

"Members of the public should control their weight in terms of observing good dietary practice and appropriate physical activities.  Before using drugs for weight reduction, they should first consult their family doctors to ascertain the medicines given for treatment are approved for use in Hong Kong," he added.
