TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN
 
HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.
 
THE NO. 8 NORTHEAST GALE OR STORM SIGNAL WAS ISSUED AT
11:50 P.M.
 
THIS MEANS THAT WINDS WITH MEAN SPEEDS OF 63 KILOMETRES PER
HOUR OR MORE ARE EXPECTED FROM THE NORTHEAST QUARTER.
 
AT MIDNIGHT, TYPHOON KOINU WAS CENTRED ABOUT 70 KILOMETRES
SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF HONG KONG OBSERVATORY (NEAR 21.7 DEGREES
NORTH 113.9 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST OR
WEST-NORTHWEST SLOWLY EDGING CLOSER TO THE WESTERN PART OF
THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY.


 
THE RAINBANDS ASSOCIATED WITH KOINU ARE AFFECTING THE
VICINITY OF THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY. LOCALLY, MORE THAN 50
MILLIMETRES OF RAINFALL WERE RECORDED OVER MANY PLACES
TONIGHT (8 OCTOBER), AND THE RAINFALL OVER SOUTHERN
DISTRICT OF HONG KONG ISLAND AND LAMMA ISLAND WERE EVEN
AROUND 100 MILLIMETRES.
 
THE RADAR INDICATES THAT THE RAIN BANDS OF KOINU EXTEND 200
KM TO THE EAST OF ITS CENTRE. THE RAIN BANDS WILL
PERSISTENTLY AFFECT THE VICINITY OF THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY
TONIGHT TO TOMORROW MORNING AND BRING SQUALLS TO THE
REGION. WINDS MAY OCCASIONALLY BE UP TO GALE FORCE. THE
GALE OR STORM SIGNAL NO. 8 WILL REMAIN IN FORCE AT LEAST
UNTIL 11 A.M. TOMORROW (9 OCTOBER).
 
HEAVY SQUALLY SHOWERS WILL STILL BE EXPECTED OVER HONG KONG
TOMORROW. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE
LATEST WEATHER BULLETINS FROM THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.


 
IN THE PAST HOUR, THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECORDED AT
TATE'S CAIRN, SHA CHAU AND CHEUNG CHAU BEACH WERE 75, 63
AND 62 KILOMETRES PER HOUR WITH MAXIMUM GUSTS EXCEEDING
104, 77 AND 74 KILOMETRES PER HOUR RESPECTIVELY.

STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE AND LOW-LYING AREAS, AND NOT
TO ENGAGE IN WATER SPORTS.
