TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 9)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN

HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

THE INCREASING GALE OR STORM SIGNAL, NO. 9, IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE
SIGNIFICANTLY AS KOINU MOVES CLOSER TO HONG KONG.

AT MIDNIGHT, TYPHOON KOINU WAS CENTRED ABOUT 70 KILOMETRES
SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF HONG KONG OBSERVATORY (NEAR 21.7 DEGREES
NORTH 113.9 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST OR
WEST-NORTHWEST SLOWLY EDGING CLOSER TO THE WESTERN PART OF
THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY.

IN THE PAST COUPLE OF HOURS, KOINU TRACKED WESTWARDS
STEADILY. THE ASSOCIATED HURRICANE FORCE WINDS ARE EXPECTED
TO GRADUALLY DEPART FROM THE SEAS SOUTH OF HONG KONG. THE
HONG KONG OBSERVATORY WILL ISSUE THE GALE OR STORM SIGNAL
NO. 8 SHORTLY AT 11:50 P.M.

THE RADAR INDICATES THAT THE RAIN BANDS OF KOINU EXTEND 200
KM TO THE EAST OF ITS CENTRE. THE RAIN BANDS WILL
PERSISTENTLY AFFECT THE VICINITY OF THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY
TONIGHT TO TOMORROW MORNING AND BRING SQUALLS TO THE
REGION. WINDS MAY OCCASIONALLY BE UP TO GALE FORCE. THE
GALE OR STORM SIGNAL NO. 8 WILL REMAIN IN FORCE AT LEAST
UNTIL 11 A.M. TOMORROW.

HEAVY SQUALLY SHOWERS WILL STILL BE EXPECTED OVER HONG KONG
TOMORROW. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE
LATEST WEATHER BULLETINS FROM THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

IN THE PAST HOUR, THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECORDED AT
TATE'S CAIRN, SHA CHAU AND CHEUNG CHAU BEACH WERE 75, 63
AND 62 KILOMETRES PER HOUR WITH MAXIMUM GUSTS EXCEEDING
104, 77 AND 74 KILOMETRES PER HOUR RESPECTIVELY.

(PRECAUTIONARY ANNOUNCEMENTS)

1. DO NOT GO OUTSIDE. IF YOU ARE REASONABLY PROTECTED, STAY
WHERE YOU ARE. DO NOT TOUCH ELECTRIC CABLES THAT HAVE BEEN
BLOWN LOOSE.

2. STAY AWAY FROM EXPOSED WINDOWS AND DOORS BECAUSE GLASS,
ALREADY UNDER STRAIN FROM WIND PRESSURE, WILL SHATTER
EASILY IF HIT BY A FLYING OBJECT. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SAFE
PLACE TO SHELTER. YOU SHOULD ONLY FIX BROKEN WINDOWS AND
DOORS WHEN THERE IS NO DANGER IN DOING SO.

3. OWING TO STORM SURGE, SOME LOW-LYING AREAS MAY HAVE
SERIOUS FLOODING OR BACKFLOW OF SEAWATER. YOU SHOULD AVOID
GOING TO LIKELY AFFECTED LOW-LYING AREAS AND STAY AWAY FROM
DANGEROUS PLACES.

4. SINCE SEAS ARE HIGH, AND THERE ARE SWELLS. YOU ARE
ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE AND LOW-LYING
AREAS, AND NOT TO ENGAGE IN WATER SPORTS.

5. PEOPLE OUTDOORS SHOULD FIND A SAFE PLACE NOW AND REMAIN
THERE UNTIL THE DANGER IS OVER.
