TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN
HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.
THE NO. 8 NORTHEAST GALE OR STORM SIGNAL IS IN FORCE.
THIS MEANS THAT WINDS WITH MEAN SPEEDS OF 63 KILOMETRES PER
HOUR OR MORE ARE EXPECTED FROM THE NORTHEAST QUARTER.
AT 2 P.M., TYPHOON KOINU WAS CENTRED ABOUT 90 KILOMETRES
SOUTH OF HONG KONG OBSERVATORY (NEAR 21.5 DEGREES NORTH
114.3 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST OR
WEST-NORTHWEST SLOWLY EDGING CLOSER TO THE PEARL RIVER
ESTUARY.
UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF KOINU, GALE WINDS ARE AFFECTING MANY
OFFSHORE PLACES LOCALLY WITH OCCASIONAL STORM FORCE WINDS
ON HIGH GROUND. ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT FORECAST TRACK,
KOINU WILL BE CLOSEST TO HONG KONG TONIGHT, SKIRTING ABOUT
70 KILOMETRES SOUTH OF THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY. LOCAL
WIND DIRECTION WILL CHANGE FROM NORTHERLIES TO EASTERLIES
GRADUALLY. PLACES THAT HAVE BEEN SHELTERED BEFORE WILL
BECOME MORE EXPOSED TO HIGH WINDS.
IF KOINU MAINTAINS ITS CURRENT INTENSITY, ITS HURRICANE
WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO BE RATHER CLOSE TO THE SEAS SOUTH OF
THE TERRITORY TONIGHT. DEPENDING ON THE VARIATION OF WIND
STRENGTH LOCALLY, THE OBSERVATORY WILL ASSESS THE NEED FOR
ISSUANCE OF HIGHER TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING SIGNALS.
INTENSE RAIN BANDS ASSOCIATED WITH KOINU ARE APPROACHING
HONG KONG FROM THE EAST. HEAVY SQUALLY SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED
TODAY AND TOMORROW. THE PUBLIC IS ADVISED TO TAKE NOTE OF
THE LATEST WEATHER BULLETINS FROM THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.
IN THE PAST HOUR, THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECORDED AT
TATE'S CAIRN, WAGLAN ISLAND AND GREEN ISLAND WERE 98, 83
AND 65 KILOMETRES PER HOUR WITH MAXIMUM GUSTS EXCEEDING
121, 100 AND 78 KILOMETRES PER HOUR RESPECTIVELY.
(PRECAUTIONARY ANNOUNCEMENTS WITH NO. 8 SIGNAL)

GLASS. DRAINS SHOULD BE CLEARED OF LEAVES AND RUBBISH AS
SOON AS POSSIBLE.
2. PARK YOUR CAR WHERE IT IS SAFE.
3. DO NOT STAND NEAR WINDOWS ON THE EXPOSED SIDE OF YOUR
HOME. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SAFE PLACE TO SHELTER, SHOULD
WINDOWS BE BROKEN.
4. OWING TO STORM SURGE, SOME LOW-LYING AREAS MAY HAVE
SERIOUS FLOODING OR BACKFLOW OF SEAWATER. YOU SHOULD AVOID
GOING TO LIKELY AFFECTED LOW-LYING AREAS AND STAY AWAY FROM
DANGEROUS PLACES.
5. SEAS ARE HIGH, AND THERE ARE SWELLS. YOU ARE ADVISED TO
STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE AND LOW-LYING AREAS, AND NOT
TO ENGAGE IN WATER SPORTS.
