PRESS WEATHER NO. 224 - TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 3)
************************************************************************
TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 3)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN

HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

THE STRONG WIND SIGNAL, NO. 3 IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT WINDS WITH MEAN SPEEDS OF 41 TO 62
KILOMETRES PER HOUR ARE EXPECTED.

AT 11 P.M., TYPHOON KOINU WAS ESTIMATED TO BE ABOUT 230
KILOMETRES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 21.2 DEGREES
NORTH 116.0 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST AT
ABOUT 12 KILOMETRES PER HOUR ACROSS THE COASTAL WATERS OF
GUANGDONG.

KOINU HAS COMPACT CIRCULATION AND CONTINUES TO TRACK
WESTWARDS STEADILY, EDGING TOWARDS THE VICINITY OF THE
PEARL RIVER ESTUARY WITH TYPHOON STRENGTH. LOCAL WINDS WILL
BECOME GENERALLY STRONG GRADUALLY, REACHING GALE FORCE
OCCASIONALLY ON HIGH GROUND. UNDER THE COMBINED EFFECT OF
KOINU AND THE NORTHEAST MONSOON, LOCAL WINDS ARE EXPECTED
TO STRENGTHEN FURTHER FROM SATURDAY (7 OCT) TO SUNDAY (8
OCT) WITH GALES POSSIBLE OVER PARTS OF THE TERRITORY
PARTICULARLY THE SOUTHERN PART.

THE GALE WINDS ASSOCIATED WITH KOINU ARE STILL AT SOME
DISTANCE FROM HONG KONG. THE STRONG WIND SIGNAL, NO. 3 WILL
REMAIN IN FORCE AT LEAST UNTIL 8 A.M. OF SATURDAY.
DEPENDING ON THE INTENSITY AND SPEED OF MOVEMENT OF KOINU,
AS WELL AS THE DISTANCE OF ITS ASSOCIATED GALE WINDS FROM
HONG KONG, THE OBSERVATORY WILL THEN ASSESS THE NEED FOR
ISSUANCE OF HIGHER TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING SIGNALS.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF KOINU, THERE WILL BE SQUALLY SHOWERS
IN THE COMING TWO TO THREE DAYS LOCALLY. SHOWERS WILL BE
HEAVY AT TIMES ON SUNDAY AND MONDAY. THE PUBLIC IS ADVISED
TO TAKE NOTE OF THE LATEST WEATHER BULLETINS FROM THE
OBSERVATORY.

IN THE PAST HOUR, THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECORDED AT
TATE'S CAIRN WAS 51 KILOMETRES PER HOUR WITH MAXIMUM GUST
EXCEEDING 64 KILOMETRES PER HOUR.
