PRESS WEATHER NO. 110 - TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 1)
************************************************************************
TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 1)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN

HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

THE STANDBY SIGNAL, NO. 1 IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT A TROPICAL CYCLONE NOW CENTRED WITHIN ABOUT
800 KILOMETRES OF HONG KONG MAY AFFECT US.

AT NOON, TYPHOON KOINU WAS ESTIMATED TO BE ABOUT 320
KILOMETRES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 21.7 DEGREES
NORTH 117.2 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST AT
ABOUT 12 KILOMETRES PER HOUR ACROSS THE COASTAL WATERS OF
GUANGDONG.

AS KOINU CONTINUES TO EDGE CLOSER TO THE COAST OF EASTERN
GUANGDONG, LOCAL WINDS WILL STRENGTHEN GRADUALLY TODAY. THE
OBSERVATORY WILL ISSUE THE STRONG WIND SIGNAL, NO. 3 AT
5:40 P.M. TODAY. THERE WILL BE SWELLS. MEMBERS OF THE
PUBLIC ARE ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE AND NOT
TO ENGAGE IN WATER SPORTS.

KOINU IS EXPECTED TO EDGE CLOSER TO THE VICINITY OF THE
PEARL RIVER ESTUARY IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. WITH THE
CIRCULATION OF KOINU BEING RELATIVELY SMALL, THE NEED FOR
ISSUANCE OF HIGHER TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING SIGNALS BY THEN
WILL DEPEND ON THE INTENSITY OF KOINU AND ITS DISTANCE FROM
HONG KONG.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF KOINU, THERE WILL BE SQUALLY SHOWERS
IN THE COMING TWO TO THREE DAYS LOCALLY. SHOWERS WILL BE
HEAVY AT TIMES ON SUNDAY AND MONDAY. THE PUBLIC IS ADVISED
TO TAKE NOTE OF THE LATEST WEATHER BULLETINS FROM THE
OBSERVATORY.
