TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 1)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN
HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.
THE STANDBY SIGNAL, NO. 1 IS IN FORCE.
THIS MEANS THAT A TROPICAL CYCLONE NOW CENTRED WITHIN ABOUT
800 KILOMETRES OF HONG KONG MAY AFFECT US.
AT 2 A.M., TYPHOON KOINU WAS ESTIMATED TO BE ABOUT 450
KILOMETRES EAST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 21.9 DEGREES NORTH 118.5
DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST AT ABOUT 10
KILOMETRES PER HOUR ACROSS THE NORTHEASTERN PART OF THE
SOUTH CHINA SEA.
UNDER THE COMBINED EFFECT OF THE NORTHEAST MONSOON AND
KOINU, LOCAL WINDS ARE OCCASIONALLY STRONG OFFSHORE AND ON
HIGH GROUND. ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT FORECAST TRACK, THE
CHANCE OF STRONG WINDS PREVAILING OVER THE TERRITORY THIS
MORNING (6 OCT) IS LOW. THE STANDBY SIGNAL, NO. 1 WILL
REMAIN IN FORCE AT LEAST UNTIL NOON.
WITH KOINU GRADUALLY EDGING CLOSER TO THE COAST OF EASTERN
GUANGDONG, WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO STRENGTHEN GRADUALLY OVER
THE REGION THIS AFTERNOON. THE OBSERVATORY WILL CONSIDER
ISSUING THE STRONG WIND SIGNAL, NO. 3 FROM TONIGHT TO
SATURDAY MORNING. UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF THE NORTHEAST
MONSOON, KOINU WILL WEAKEN SLIGHTLY OVER THE COASTAL WATERS
OF EASTERN GUANGDONG. HOWEVER, IT WILL EDGE CLOSER TO THE
VICINITY OF THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY GRADUALLY. THE NEED TO
ISSUE HIGHER TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING SIGNALS DEPENDS ON
ITS INTENSITY AND ITS DISTANCE FROM THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY
WHEN IT EDGES CLOSER TO THE REGION.
UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF KOINU, THERE WILL BE HEAVY SHOWERS
LOCALLY ON SUNDAY AND MONDAY. THE PUBLIC IS ADVISED TO TAKE
NOTE OF THE LATEST WEATHER BULLETINS FROM THE OBSERVATORY.
(PRECAUTIONARY ANNOUNCEMENTS WITH NO. 1 SIGNAL)
1. PRECAUTIONS SHOULD BE TAKEN. DRAINS SHOULD BE CLEARED OF
