PRESS WEATHER NO. 118 - TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 1)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 1)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN

HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

THE STANDBY SIGNAL, NO. 1 IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT A TROPICAL CYCLONE NOW CENTRED WITHIN ABOUT
800 KILOMETRES OF HONG KONG MAY AFFECT US.

AT NOON, SEVERE TYPHOON KOINU WAS ESTIMATED TO BE ABOUT 650
KILOMETRES EAST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 22.0 DEGREES NORTH 120.5
DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST AT ABOUT 10
KILOMETRES PER HOUR ACROSS THE TAIWAN STRAIT.

KOINU HAS CROSSED THE SOUTHERN PART OF TAIWAN, ENTERING THE
TAIWAN STRAIT. LOCALLY, THERE ARE OCCASIONALLY STRONG WINDS
ON HIGH GROUND DUE TO THE COMBINED EFFECT OF THE NORTHEAST
MONSOON AND KOINU. ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT FORECAST TRACK,
KOINU WILL MAINTAIN A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 500 KILOMETRES OR
MORE FROM HONG KONG TODAY. THE CHANCE OF STRONG WIND
PREVAILING OVER THE TERRITORY TODAY IS LOW. THE STANDBY
SIGNAL, NO. 1 IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN FORCE TODAY.

KOINU IS EXPECTED TO MOVE TOWARDS THE COASTAL WATERS OF THE
EASTERN PART OF GUANGDONG AFTERWARDS AND WILL WEAKEN
GRADUALLY DUE TO THE MONSOON. KOINU MAY EDGE CLOSER TO THE
VICINITY OF THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY OVER THE WEEKEND, BUT
ITS INTENSITY IS EXPECTED TO BE RELATIVELY WEAK BY THEN.
THE NEED FOR ISSUANCE OF HIGHER TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING
SIGNALS DEPENDS ON HOW FAST KOINU WEAKENS AND ITS DISTANCE
FROM THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY. LOCALLY, THERE WILL BE
SHOWERS WITH STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS OVER THE WEEKEND AND
NEXT MONDAY. SHOWERS WILL BE HEAVY AT TIMES. WINDS WILL BE
PARTICULARLY STRONG OFFSHORE AND ON HIGH GROUND. THE
WEATHER WILL BE COOLER. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC PLEASE TAKE
NOTE OF THE LATEST WEATHER BULLETINS FROM THE OBSERVATORY.
