PRESS WEATHER NO. 094 - TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 1)
************************************************************************
TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 1)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN

HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

THE STANDBY SIGNAL, NO. 1 IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT A TROPICAL CYCLONE NOW CENTRED WITHIN ABOUT
800 KILOMETRES OF HONG KONG MAY AFFECT US.

AT 10 A.M., SEVERE TYPHOON KOINU WAS ESTIMATED TO BE ABOUT
680 KILOMETRES EAST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 21.9 DEGREES NORTH
120.7 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST AT ABOUT
10 KILOMETRES PER HOUR ACROSS THE SOUTHERN PART OF TAIWAN.

KOINU IS MOVING ACROSS THE SOUTHERN PART OF TAIWAN. UNDER
THE INFLUENCE OF THE TERRAIN OF TAIWAN, KOINU HAS WEAKENED
SLIGHTLY. LOCALLY, THERE WERE OCCASIONALLY STRONG WINDS
OFFSHORE AND ON HIGH GROUND THIS MORNING DUE TO THE
COMBINED EFFECT OF THE NORTHEAST MONSOON AND KOINU.
ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT FORECAST TRACK, KOINU WILL
MAINTAIN A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 500 KILOMETRES OR MORE FROM
HONG KONG TODAY. THE CHANCE OF STRONG WIND PREVAILING OVER
THE TERRITORY TODAY IS LOW. THE STANDBY SIGNAL, NO. 1 IS
EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN FORCE TODAY.

KOINU IS EXPECTED TO MOVE TOWARDS THE COASTAL WATERS OF THE
EASTERN PART OF GUANGDONG AFTERWARDS AND WILL WEAKEN
GRADUALLY DUE TO THE MONSOON. KOINU MAY EDGE CLOSER TO THE
VICINITY OF THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY OVER THE WEEKEND, BUT
ITS INTENSITY IS EXPECTED TO BE RELATIVELY WEAK BY THEN.
THE NEED FOR ISSUANCE OF HIGHER TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING
SIGNALS DEPENDS ON HOW FAST KOINU WEAKENS AND ITS DISTANCE
FROM THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY. LOCALLY, THERE WILL BE
SHOWERS WITH STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS OVER THE WEEKEND.
SHOWERS WILL BE HEAVY AT TIMES. WINDS WILL BE PARTICULARLY
STRONG IN SOME AREAS, INCLUDING OFFSHORE AND HIGH GROUND.
THE WEATHER WILL BE COOLER. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC PLEASE
TAKE NOTE OF THE LATEST WEATHER BULLETINS FROM THE
OBSERVATORY.
