PRESS WEATHER NO. 014 - TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 1)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 1)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN

HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

THE STANDBY SIGNAL, NO. 1 IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT A TROPICAL CYCLONE NOW CENTRED WITHIN ABOUT
800 KILOMETRES OF HONG KONG MAY AFFECT US.

AT 2 A.M., SEVERE TYPHOON KOINU WAS ESTIMATED TO BE ABOUT
740 KILOMETRES EAST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 21.9 DEGREES NORTH
121.3 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST AT ABOUT
12 KILOMETRES PER HOUR TOWARDS THE VICINITY OF THE SOUTHERN
PART OF TAIWAN.

ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT FORECAST TRACK, KOINU WILL SKIRT
THE SOUTHERN PART OF TAIWAN AND MOVE TOWARDS THE COASTAL
WATERS OF EASTERN GUANGDONG TODAY, MAINTAINING A DISTANCE
OF OVER 500 KILOMETRES FROM HONG KONG. THE CHANCE OF
STRONG WINDS GENERALLY OVER HONG KONG TODAY IS NOT HIGH.
THE STANDBY SIGNAL, NO. 1 WILL REMAIN IN FORCE FOR MOST OF
TODAY.

KOINU IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE TO MOVE WEST TOWARDS THE
VICINITY OF THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY WHILE GRADUALLY
WEAKENING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF THE NORTHEAST MONSOON IN
THE LATTER PART OF THIS WEEK. THE NEED TO ISSUE HIGHER
TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING SIGNALS DEPENDS ON HOW FAST KOINU
WEAKENS AND ITS DISTANCE FROM THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY.
UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF KOINU AND THE MONSOON, THERE MAY BE
SQUALLY SHOWERS WITH STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS LOCALLY OVER
THE WEEKEND. WINDS WILL BE PARTICULARLY STRONG IN SOME
AREAS, INCLUDING OFFSHORE AND HIGH GROUND. THE WEATHER WILL
BE APPRECIABLY COOLER. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC PLEASE TAKE
NOTE OF THE LATEST WEATHER BULLETINS FROM THE OBSERVATORY.
