PRESS WEATHER NO. 056 - TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 8)
************************************************************************
TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 8)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN

HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

THE NO. 8 NORTHEAST GALE OR STORM SIGNAL IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT WINDS WITH MEAN SPEEDS OF 63 KILOMETRES PER
HOUR OR MORE ARE EXPECTED FROM THE NORTHEAST QUARTER.

AT 5 A.M., TYPHOON TALIM WAS CENTRED ABOUT 270 KILOMETRES
SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 19.9 DEGREES NORTH 113.6
DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST-NORTHWEST AT
ABOUT 18 KILOMETRES PER HOUR IN THE GENERAL DIRECTION OF
LEIZHOU PENINSULA AND HAINAN ISLAND, AND CONTINUE TO
INTENSIFY.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF TALIM, STRONG WINDS PREVAIL OVER
HONG KONG, WITH GALES OVER OFFSHORE WATERS AND ON HIGH
GROUND. ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT FORECAST TRACK, TALIM WILL
SKIRT WITHIN 300 KILOMETRES TO THE SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF HONG
KONG THIS MORNING. LOCAL WINDS WILL TURN GRADUALLY TO EAST
TO SOUTHEASTERLIES AND STRENGTHEN FURTHER. MEANWHILE, THE
RAIN BANDS OF TALIM ARE AFFECTING THE COAST OF GUANGDONG.
FREQUENT SQUALLY SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED OVER HONG KONG TODAY.

THE GALE OR STORM SIGNAL NO. 8 WILL REMAIN IN FORCE BEFORE
NOON. WHETHER THE SIGNAL NO. 8 WILL REMAIN IN FORCE
THEREAFTER WILL DEPEND ON THE CHANGES IN LOCAL WIND
STRENGTH, AND HOW PERSISTENT THE GUSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE
RAINBANDS OF TALIM WILL AFFECT HONG KONG.

UNDER THE COMBINED EFFECT OF THE STORM SURGE BROUGHT BY
TALIM AND THE SPRING TIDE, THERE MAY BE FLOODING IN COASTAL
LOW-LYING AREAS IN THE MORNING. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC
SHOULD COMPLETE PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES AGAINST HIGH WINDS
AND FLOODING AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. SEAS ARE ROUGH TO VERY
ROUGH WITH SWELLS. PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE AND
DO NOT ENGAGE IN WATER SPORTS.

IN THE PAST HOUR, THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECORDED AT
NGONG PING, WAGLAN ISLAND AND CHEUNG CHAU BEACH WERE 96, 78
AND 70 KILOMETRES PER HOUR WITH MAXIMUM GUSTS EXCEEDING
114, 91 AND 90 KILOMETRES PER HOUR RESPECTIVELY.
