************************************************************************
TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 8)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN

HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

THE NO. 8 SOUTHEAST GALE OR STORM SIGNAL IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT WINDS WITH MEAN SPEEDS OF 63 KILOMETRES PER
HOUR OR MORE ARE EXPECTED FROM THE SOUTHEAST QUARTER.

AT 4 A.M., SEVERE TROPICAL STORM MA-ON WAS CENTRED ABOUT
190 KILOMETRES SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 20.8
DEGREES NORTH 113.3 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE
WEST-NORTHWEST AT ABOUT 28 KILOMETRES PER HOUR IN THE
GENERAL DIRECTION OF THE COAST OF WESTERN GUANGDONG.

MA-ON IS CLOSEST TO THE TERRITORY NOW, SKIRTING AT AROUND
200 KILOMETRES TO THE SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF HONG KONG. GALES
ARE AFFECTING MANY PLACES IN THE TERRITORY WHILE WINDS ON
HIGH GROUND OCCASIONALLY REACH STORM FORCE. MEANWHILE,
SHOWERS ASSOCIATED WITH MA-ON ARE EDGING CLOSER TO THE
TERRITORY AND MAY BRING VIOLENT GUSTS. NO. 8 GALE OR STORM
SIGNAL IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN FORCE BEFORE 9 A.M. TODAY.
WITH MA-ON DEPARTING, LOCAL WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO WEAKEN
GRADUALLY BEFORE NOON. DEPENDING ON THE CHANGES IN LOCAL
WINDS, THE OBSERVATORY WILL ASSESS THE NEED FOR ISSUING
STRONG WIND SIGNAL, NO. 3 TO REPLACE THE NO. 8 GALE OR
STORM SIGNAL.

SEAS WILL BE VERY ROUGH WITH SWELLS. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC
ARE ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE, AND NOT TO
ENGAGE IN WATER SPORTS.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF STORM SURGE AND ASTRONOMICAL HIGH
TIDE, A HIGH WATER LEVEL OF AROUND 3 METRES ABOVE CHART
DATUM, OR ABOUT 1 METRE ABOVE THE NORMAL TIDE HEIGHTS, IS
EXPECTED AT QUARRY BAY BETWEEN 5 A.M. AND 9 A.M. TODAY. THE
HIGH WATER LEVEL MAY CAUSE FLOODING IN LOW-LYING AREAS. YOU
SHOULD AVOID GOING TO LIKELY AFFECTED LOW-LYING AREAS AND
STAY AWAY FROM DANGEROUS PLACES.

IN THE PAST HOUR, THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECORDED AT
NGONG PING, CHEUNG CHAU AND WAGLAN ISLAND WERE 106, 87 AND
77 KILOMETRES PER HOUR WITH MAXIMUM GUSTS 132, 108 AND 94
KILOMETRES PER HOUR RESPECTIVELY.
