TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN
HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.
THE NO. 8 NORTHEAST GALE OR STORM SIGNAL IS IN FORCE.
THIS MEANS THAT WINDS WITH MEAN SPEEDS OF 63 KILOMETRES PER
HOUR OR MORE ARE EXPECTED FROM THE NORTHEAST QUARTER.
AT 4 P.M., TROPICAL STORM NANGKA WAS CENTRED ABOUT 530
KILOMETRES SOUTHWEST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 18.7 DEGREES NORTH
110.9 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST OR
WEST-NORTHWEST AT ABOUT 20 KILOMETRES PER HOUR TOWARDS
HAINAN ISLAND.
UNDER THE COMBINED EFFECT OF NANGKA AND THE NORTHEAST
MONSOON, GALE FORCE WINDS ARE AFFECTING THE OFFSHORE WATERS
AND THE HIGH GROUND IN THE TERRITORY. WINDS ARE GENERALLY
STRONGER OVER THE SOUTHERN PART OF HONG KONG. GALE FORCE
WINDS WERE RECORDED AT GREEN ISLAND IN THE VICTORIA
HARBOUR. THERE WILL STILL BE A THREAT OF GALE FORCE WINDS
TO HONG KONG FOR A PERIOD OF TIME.
WITH NANGKA MAKING LANDFALL OVER HAINAN ISLAND AND
WEAKENING AS WELL AS MOVING FURTHER AWAY FROM HONG KONG,
THE LOCAL WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO WEAKEN GRADUALLY. DEPENDING
ON THE LOCAL WIND CONDITIONS, THE OBSERVATORY WILL CONSIDER
ISSUING THE STRONG WIND SIGNAL, NO. 3 FROM THIS EVENING TO
TONIGHT.
THE RAIN BANDS ASSOCIATED WITH NANGKA ARE AFFECTING THE
PEARL RIVER ESTUARY. THERE WILL BE SWELLS AND VERY ROUGH
SEAS. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC ARE ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM
THE SHORELINE AND NOT TO ENGAGE IN WATER SPORTS.
IN THE PAST HOUR, THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECORDED AT
WAGLAN ISLAND, GREEN ISLAND AND CHEUNG CHAU BEACH WERE 82,
65 AND 58 KILOMETRES PER HOUR WITH MAXIMUM GUSTS EXCEEDING
90, 82 AND 78 KILOMETRES PER HOUR RESPECTIVELY.
