TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 1)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN

HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

THE STANDBY SIGNAL, NO. 1 IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT A TROPICAL CYCLONE NOW CENTRED WITHIN ABOUT
800 KILOMETRES OF HONG KONG MAY AFFECT US.

AT 2 A.M., THE TROPICAL DEPRESSION OVER THE CENTRAL TO
NORTHERN PARTS OF THE SOUTH CHINA SEA WAS ESTIMATED TO BE
ABOUT 680 KILOMETRES SOUTHEAST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 17.3
DEGREES NORTH 117.9 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE
WEST OR WEST-NORTHWEST AT ABOUT 20 KILOMETRES PER HOUR IN
THE GENERAL DIRECTION OF THE VICINITY OF HAINAN ISLAND AND
INTENSIFY GRADUALLY.

ACCORDING TO THE CURRENT FORECAST TRACK, THE TROPICAL
DEPRESSION WILL REMAIN AT A DISTANCE FROM HONG KONG THIS
MORNING (12TH OCT). LOCAL WINDS WILL NOT STRENGTHEN
SIGNIFICANTLY. THE CHANCE OF ISSUING THE STRONG WIND
SIGNAL, NO. 3 BEFORE NOON IS NOT HIGH.

AS THE TROPICAL DEPRESSION GRADUALLY EDGES CLOSER TO THE
SOUTH CHINA COAST, TOGETHER WITH THE COMBINED EFFECT WITH
THE NORTHEAST MONSOON, LOCAL WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO
STRENGTHEN GRADUALLY LATER TODAY. SEAS WILL BE ROUGH WITH
SWELLS. THE OBSERVATORY WILL CONSIDER ISSUING THE STRONG
WIND SIGNAL, NO. 3 THIS AFTERNOON TO EVENING.
