EPD deeply saddened by passing of worker in accident at WENT Landfill Extension site

     ​The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) is highly concerned about the industrial accident occurred today (December 1) at the West New Territories (WENT) Landfill Extension site, which resulted in the death of a worker. The department was deeply saddened by the passing of worker and has extended its deepest condolences to his family.

     The deceased was a worker employed by a subcontractor for the WENT Landfill Extension. At around 4.15 pm today, he was suspected to have been struck by a hard object while working in the rebar bending area of the site. He was sent to Tuen Mun Hospital in unconscious state, and was certified dead at around 6pm.

     The EPD immediately deployed staff to the hospital to obtain details of the accident. The Director of Environmental Protection, Dr Samuel Chui, was deeply saddened by the incident. The department is contacting the deceased's family through the contractor to extend sympathies and provide them with appropriate assistance. It is noted that the contractor will provide an ex-gratia relief payment to the family.

     The EPD is very concerned about the accident. It has notified the Labour Department and the Police immediately after the incident, and has requested the contractor to fully co-operate with the Labour Department in its investigation. The EPD has also requested the contractor to submit an incident report within seven days.

     The EPD has all along put emphasis on the site safety of construction projects, and closely monitoring the work of contractors. In addition to regular daily inspections on the site and occupational safety conditions, the contractor also provides safety training for subcontractors.
