******************************************************************************************
Police Hong Kong Island Regional Headquarters conducted an inter-departmental major incident exercise codenamed “BROKENPIN II” with the Fire Services Department, Hospital Authority and Hong Kong Jockey Club at Happy Valley Racecourse this morning (November 29). The exercise simulated an incident involving suspicious items during a race day, followed by a fire caused by the incident, to strengthen the prevention, collaboration and response capabilities of Police and stakeholders.

The exercise simulated the discovery of a suspicious item during the racing event. Police promptly cordoned off the area with the security staff, while officers of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau (EOD) handled the suspicious item at the scene. They then swiftly controlled the extreme violent individuals related to the incident. Following that, a fire triggered by the incident was simulated. Police promptly coordinated rescue operation with various departments. They successfully evacuated the crowds and rendered emergency care to the injured. A command post and triage station were set up at the scene to ensure timely and orderly rescue operations. The exercise aimed to test and enhance the response capabilities of officers from relevant departments in handling suspicious items and large-scale evacuation incidents.

Over 250 personnel took part in the exercise. In addition, EOD officers provided security staff with knowledge on how to avoid risks and handle suspicious items, enabling participants to better respond to emergencies. To enhance public safety awareness, Police also invited mentees from the Police Mentorship Programme to participate in the exercise, promoting safety knowledge of "Run, Hide, Report" and "Spot and Report."

Police will continue to maintain close communication with stakeholders, conduct regular inter-departmental exercises to review contingency plans and strengthen the coordination among different departments, so as to ensure quick and effective responses to emergencies.
