A three-day International Symposium on Cyber Policing was launched today (September 13) in Hong Kong.
Hosted by the Hong Kong Police Force, the symposium aims at exploring the opportunities and challenges brought forward by the rapid development of technology to policing in the future.
Speaking at the Opening Ceremony, the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Chan Kwok-ki, said that the international symposium comes at the right time.
"While enjoying the convenience brought about by technological advancement, we are faced with increasing cyber risks where cybersecurity threats and cybercrime have become the critical concerns to many people and businesses alike, "he said. "As a result, for many law enforcement agencies in Hong Kong and beyond, it has become one of the top work priorities to step up cybersecurity."
He added that cybersecurity and cybercrime are not confined to a particular place by nature, but go beyond geographical boundaries. It is equally important for law enforcement agencies from around the world to join hands in combating cross-border cybercrime and fostering experience exchange.
Vice Minister of Public Security, Mr Chen Siyuan, said in his opening remarks that we should adhere to openness and inclusiveness, and work together to address the challenges ahead.
"We should actively and practically pursue global governance through the processes of deliberations, and sharing with joint efforts. We should advocate cooperation in cybersecurity, uphold the principles of mutual assistance, openness, inclusiveness, equality and mutual benefits. It is necessary for us to further enhance strategic mutual trust, share information on cyber threats timely, strengthen the protection of critical information infrastructure and international cooperation on data security. We should have effective coordination in handling major cybersecurity incidents, combat cybercrime and respond to cybersecurity risks and challenges ahead together," he said.
Also present were the Secretary for Security, Mr Tang Ping-keung and the Commissioner of Police, Mr Siu Chak-yee.
The symposium provided an opportunity for speakers and delegates from local, Mainland and international law enforcement agencies, academic and private sectors to share views on the latest development of technology and the associated implications on policing with an aim to fostering international collaboration.
The need for cooperation and collaboration between law enforcement agencies and private sectors both at international and local levels, as well as the importance of intelligence and knowledge sharing at all times are also the foci of the symposium.
The symposium attracted more than 100 senior leaders of law enforcement agencies from around 40 countries and regions (including Mainland, Macau and Hong Kong) as well as academia and experts in the fields of digital communications, finance, innovation technology and cyber security.
