Hamilton Street Rest Garden to reopen after refurbishment (with photos)
***********************************************************************
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) announced today (June 30) that refurbishment works for Hamilton Street Rest Garden in Yau Tsim Mong District have been completed. The facilities will reopen tomorrow (July 1) for public use.

The LCSD collaborated with the Architectural Services Department, the former Policy Innovation and Co-ordination Office and the Design Trust Futures Studio to carry out a facility renovation project for Hamilton Street Rest Garden, providing a quality communal space for the local community and other users. Through a series of public engagements, the Design Trust Futures Studio organised public workshops and collaborated with craftsman from local and unique handicraft shops to design the elements of the park. The prototypes made were displayed at an exhibition as a way of introducing the public to the design concept.

Living in Hong Kong, table sharing with others is a common practice, either in a Chinese restaurant or a Hong Kong-style café. The Hamilton Street Rest Garden improvement project has transformed the garden into an outdoor space where people can share a table with others. A large-scale communal table is placed at the centre of the garden, surrounded by uniquely designed seating. The orientation of the seats and the sizable table enable users to easily engage with each other. Sculptured with an undulating surface, the table showcases an abstract map of the neighbourhood.

The LCSD has completed refurbishment works at Yi Pei Square Playground in Tsuen Wan District, Portland Street Rest Garden in Yau Tsim Mong District and Sitting-out Area under Flyover in Hill Road in Central and Western District, aiming to bring innovative designs and art elements to small outdoor leisure venues with high visitor flows, and to improve these older public spaces.
