Bus Safety Campaign launched (with photos)
******************************************
The campaign aims to enhance safety awareness among bus passengers, bus captains and other road users to promote the safety of franchised buses.
Speaking at the kick-off ceremony, the Commissioner for Transport, Miss Rosanna Law, said that millions of passengers commute by franchised buses daily. They want to be assured that they can get to their destinations safely and smoothly. Therefore it is important to make bus rides safe.
The TD and the franchised bus companies have been strengthening bus captains' training and hazard awareness. Bus captains are regularly reminded of the importance of driving carefully and attentively at all times. Passengers and other road users also play a part to make bus rides safe. For instance, passengers should practise safe travelling habits, such as holding on to the handrails while on board buses. Pedestrians should look out for vehicles, obey traffic rules and not jaywalk. Drivers of other vehicles should give way to buses, which are mass carriers. For passengers' safety, vehicle drivers should not park their vehicles near or at bus stops so that bus captains can stop their buses close to the road kerb to pick up or drop off passengers.
The TD and the franchised bus companies will relay bus safety messages to the public through a series of education activities including Bus Safety Campaign thematic webpage, videos, interactive games, posters and banners.
Other officiating guests at the kick-off ceremony included the Chairman of the Legislative Council Panel on Transport, Mr Chan Han-pan; Member of the Legislative Council for the Transport Functional Constituency Mr Frankie Yick; the Chairman of the Transport Advisory Committee, Professor Stephen Cheung; Associate Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Hong Kong, Professor Wong Sze-chun; Vice President of the Education University of Hong Kong Professor Chetwyn Chan; the Managing Director of Kowloon Motor Bus Company (1933) Limited and Long Win Bus Company Limited, Mr Roger Lee; the Chief Operating Officer of Citybus Limited, Mr Richard Hall; and the Managing Director of New Lantao Bus Company (1973) Limited, Mr Wong Cheuk-on.
