SHYA meets and exchanges views with MSSY appointees (with photos)
*****************************************************************
The Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, Miss Alice Mak, today (September 17) visited the Tung Chung Community Liaison Centre to exchange views with the young people appointed to government advisory bodies under the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau (HYAB) and those related to Lantau development through the Member Self-recommendation Scheme for Youth (MSSY). Miss Mak learned about the appointees' experiences in participating in the work of the committees. She also listened to their thoughts and views on the Youth Development Blueprint and youth policy. The Under Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, Mr Clarence Leung, and the Deputy Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs (Youth Affairs), Mr Wallace Lau, also joined the visit.

The MSSY aims at providing more opportunities for young people to participate in public affairs and policy discussions, and encouraging more young people aged between 18 and 35 and committed to serving the community to join government advisory bodies. From the Pilot Member Self-recommendation Scheme for Youth to the MSSY Phase V, 65 government advisory bodies under bureaux and departments in total have been covered, of which nine advisory bodies are under the purview of the HYAB. These include the Youth Development Commission, the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education and the Community Investment and Inclusion Fund Committee. Besides the HYAB, the Lantau Development Advisory Committee and the Lantau Conservation Fund Advisory Committee under the Development Bureau also joined the MSSY Phase I and V respectively.

Miss Mak said, "Today's exchange session with youth members and visit to the Tung Chung Community Liaison Centre of the Sustainable Lantau Office of the Civil Engineering and Development Department showcase that the MSSY is a youth programme with cross-bureaux and inter-departmental collaboration, which allows young people to express their opinions on different policy areas and give full play to their strengths. Talking with the MSSY appointees, I am impressed by the young people's commitment to the future development of Hong Kong, as well as their enthusiasm in tendering advice for optimising policies and serving the society."

Five phases of the MSSY have been launched so far with over 8 200 applications being received. About 480 posts are held by young people who have been appointed to the Government's advisory and statutory bodies directly or indirectly through the Scheme. The Government will continue to expand the Scheme to cover more boards and committees of different policy areas, enabling young people to self-nominate themselves.
