Judiciary alerts public to fraudulent phone calls
*************************************************
The Judiciary today (August 26) urged the public to stay alert to phone calls purportedly made by the Judiciary.
The Judiciary recently received public enquiries about receiving phone calls from "+852 2869 0869" (which is the same number as the Judiciary's general enquiry hotline 2869 0869). The caller who claimed to be a Hong Kong High Court officer indicated that there was a document pending collection by the call recipient.
The Judiciary clarified that the calls in question were not from the Judiciary. The Judiciary has reported the case to the Police.
The Judiciary does not make calls to members of the public through the hotline. The Judiciary reminds members of the public that Judiciary staff will normally identify themselves by name first when they call members of the public by phone and will provide other particulars upon request for verification.
Members of the public are reminded to stay alert and not to follow callers' instructions or requests if they receive suspected fraudulent calls. They should report the matter to the Police if in doubt.
