SITI visits Hong Kong Science Park (with photos)

     The Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Professor Sun Dong, visited the Hong Kong Science Park today (August 9) to keep abreast of the latest developments of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP). Also joining the visit were the Permanent Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Mr Eddie Mak; the Under Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Ms Lillian Cheong; and the Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Ms Rebecca Pun.

     Accompanied by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the HKSTP, Dr Sunny Chai, and the Chief Executive Officer of the HKSTP, Mr Albert Wong, Professor Sun first visited the co-working lab and spaces provided to the innovation and technology (I&T) companies under the Incu-Bio Programme. Participating start-ups can make use of the lab facilities to conduct research and development (R&D) activities and transform their innovative ideas into fruition. He also received a briefing on the Institute for Translational Research to learn about its work on expediting the translation of biomedical technologies.
      
     Professor Sun then toured the Sportlight, an area for showcasing technologies and products of I&T start-ups, followed by a visit to a partner company of the HKSTP that focuses on applying artificial intelligence, environmental perception, deep learning and other core technologies to unmanned industrial vehicles. The company's robotics solutions cover different settings, which include the provision of autonomous vehicles and flexible unmanned solutions for intralogistics in factories and warehouses.
      
     He then visited the Drug Safety Testing Center, which was just soft launched. The centre, providing world-class infrastructure and equipment, facilitates the translation of promising therapeutics and medical devices from the pre-clinical phase to the clinical stage and speeds up commercialisation.
      
     The HKSTP has prospered and built a solid foundation for the I&T ecosystem in Hong Kong in the past two decades. The Corporation has integrated I&T into industrial development to align with the Government's initiative to promote re-industrialisation. Professor Sun said, "The country's full support for establishing Hong Kong as an international I&T hub has been included in the 14th Five-Year Plan. The Government will continue to invest in I&T and actively integrate into the overall development of our country. The Government will keep adopting a multi-pronged approach to enrich the local I&T talent pool, in order to attract overseas and Mainland I&T talents to conduct R&D work in Hong Kong, and make Hong Kong an international hub for scientific research."
