Energy Saving and Decarbonisation for All 2022 Campaign launched (with photos)

Speaking at the launch ceremony, the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, said that the Government announced last year Hong Kong's Climate Action Plan 2050, setting out the vision of "Zero-carbon Emissions • Liveable City • Sustainable Development" and outlining specific strategies and measures to strive towards the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Mr Wong appealed for full support from the community for the Energy Saving and Decarbonisation for All 2022 campaign, and for actions to tackle the challenge of climate change.
Jointly organised by the ENB and the EMSD, the Energy Saving and Decarbonisation for All 2022 campaign comprises the Energy Saving Charter 2022, the 4T Charter and competitions for organisations and students under the Energy Saving Championship Scheme.
Mr Wong said: "Buildings account for about 90 per cent of the electricity consumption in Hong Kong at present. To achieve the target of carbon neutrality, we have to raise energy efficiency of building services facilities, and at the same time reduce energy consumption of various appliances. Over 3 000 participants have signed up for the Energy Saving Charter this year. They pledged to maintain the average indoor temperature at their premises between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius during the high summer months from June to September, switch off appliances when not in use, and procure energy-efficient appliances. Moreover, six supporting organisations were presented with certificates in appreciation of their proactive support for the Government's efforts in recruiting participants for the Charter."
As for the 4T Charter, over 700 premises have joined by setting an energy saving target with an action timeline, enhancing transparency of reporting energy saving results and building energy efficiency data, and encouraging their staff to work together towards the target.
Under the Energy Saving Championship Scheme, the Wise Save @ RCx Competition encourages organisations to reduce the overall electricity consumption of buildings through retro-commissioning, while the student competition seeks to inspire the creativity of young people in energy saving and application of renewable energy.
At today's ceremony, the EMSD also announced the launch of the Online Building Based Electricity Utilisation Index Benchmarking Tool. The online benchmarking tool, through enhancing the transparency of data and benchmarks, helps mobilise the community to take collective actions to conserve energy. Provided by the EMSD, it allows users to unveil energy saving opportunities through comparing and reviewing the annual overall electricity utilisation performance of commercial buildings. The tool also provides energy saving advice for buildings. The Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Mr Pang Yiu-hung, called on different sectors and members of the public to make the most of the online benchmarking tool, and to support low-carbon transformation through proactive actions in energy saving and decarbonisation, with a view to striving towards the target of achieving carbon neutrality.
