Hong Kong Customs strengthens enforcement against cannabis (with photo)

     ​Hong Kong Customs has taken enforcement action against cannabis in the past two days. Following the seizure of about 55 kilograms of suspected cannabis buds on November 29, Customs yesterday (November 30) further seized about 28kg of suspected cannabis buds with a total estimated market value of about $6 million in Yuen Long and arrested a man suspected to be in connection with the case. The total value of the suspected cannabis buds seized in the two cases has reached $18 million.

     Customs officers intercepted a 23-year-old man who was moving goods in Yuen Long yesterday afternoon and found false compartments inside seven wooden tables being moved by him. The batch of suspected cannabis buds was found concealed inside the compartments. He was then arrested. 

     An investigation is ongoing.

     Customs will continue to maintain rigorous enforcement and strengthen enforcement against cannabis to intercept the inflow of drugs to Hong Kong.

     Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.
